Despite delayed monsoon, sowing of cotton and groundnut is going well in the Saurashtra region of Gujarat, the main area for these crops in the country. According to agriculture universities in the state, sowing conditions have been good so far.
However, the institutes add that if the rains get delayed further after June 30, the situation might become critical.
“The crops are safe till June 30. But if rains get delayed by more than 10-15 days, condition can be critical. In Saurashtra, it has been raining incessantly for last two days and farmers have begun sowing cotton and groundnut in most of the places,” said Junagadh Agriculture University Vice-Chancellor Naginbhai Patel.
