Crisil Gains Max In Week Amid Narrow Run

The broader markets ruled mixed, while index-specific stocks remained steady during the week ended January 18, 2001.

The BSE Sensex and S&P CNX Nifty moved narrowly with a marginal gain of 0.42 per cent each. The Sensex close at 3377.05 points today, while Nifty closed at 1093.15. The market capitalisation on BSE was up 1.36 per cent at Rs 5,335,91 crore. Gainers and losers were in a 1:1 ratio.

In group A, Crisil Ltd surprised everybody with a strong gain of 46.45 per cent. The stock moved up from last Friday's close of Rs 165 to end the week at Rs 241.65.

The jump in the stock price has been attributed to rumours that the company, through its co-promoters, is making a creeping acquisition.

Bharat Forge, United Breweries and Hinduja TMT gained 26 per cent. Strong results from two-wheeler companies changed the course of automobile stocks during the week.

TVS Motors was up 24.1 per cent, Mahindra & Mahindra gained 23.2 per cent, Tata Engineering and LML up 11.3 per cent each, Bajaj Auto up 9.1 per cent.

Among software stocks, Digital Global registered a gain of 13.8 per cent. The speculative activity was seen in DSQ Software which gained 12.8 per cent.

Side counters witnessed buying support with BEML registering a gain of 67.6 per cent. Among software stocks, KPIT Infosystem rose 30.97 per cent, MphasiS BFL up 26.6 per cent and Blue Star Information up 19.59 per cent.
