Crude oil gained Rs 24 to Rs 5,163 per barrel in futures trading today as speculators created fresh positions in line with a firming trend in the global markets.

At the Multi Commodity Exchange, crude oil for delivery in August rose by Rs 24, or 0.47%, to Rs 5,163 per barrel, with a business turnover of 26,670 lots.

The September contract moved up by Rs 24, or 0.46%, to Rs 5,173 per barrel in 3,189 lots.

Marketmen said a firming trend in the global markets ahead of a report that may show sales at US retailers expanded last month supported the uptrend in crude oil at futures trade here.

Meanwhile, crude oil for September delivery increased 87 cents to $93.74 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.
