New entrants in the futures and options (F&O) segment are becoming investors' most-sought-after instruments. Recently, Parsvnath Developers and Lanco Infratech got into the F&O segment immediately after listing on the cash segment, and the turnover has been soaring ever since.

On November 30 " the day of listing"Parsvnath saw 2,235 contracts worth Rs 88.98 crore being transacted on the National Stock Exchange, making it the third-highest among the single-stock futures list.

Lanco Infratech saw 9,912 contracts worth Rs 210 crore on the day of its listing.

"The hype created by real estate and infrastructure companies, and the growing importance of hedging and arbitrage play a pivotal role in these newly listed scrips attracting huge volumes in the F&O segment," said a derivatives analyst with a local brokerage house.

Significantly, the derivative contracts in Parsvnath crossed 95 per cent of the market-wide position limit on November 30, and the NSE barred taking further exposure in the Parsvnath counter in the F&O segment.

Another recently listed stock that is making waves in the F&O segment is GMR Infrastructure. The counter on Monday saw 19,544 futures contracts worth Rs 772.17 crore, making it the second-most active futures candidate after Siemens.

An NSE official said stocks were selected for the F&O segment based on the existing eligibility criteria, set by the Securities and Exchange Board of India.

Scrips that have a market capitalisation of Rs 500 crore or more will fit into the category. "For unlisted companies coming out with initial public offerings, if the net public offer is Rs 500 crore or more, the exchange could consider introducing stock options and stock futures on such stocks at the time of its listing on the cash market," stated NSE website on eligibility criteria for unlisted stocks.

Analysts said the immediate entry by companies into the F&O segment would repress the market volatility and encourage investors to buy and sell freely in both the cash and futures segments.
