Indian textile products have been targeted in recent months by some of its major trading partners. The discriminatory restrictive practices adopted by the European Union (EU) and Bangladesh, for instance, are affecting export of textile products from India.
T Kannan, chairman of the Cotton Textiles Export Promotion Council (Texprocil), said the EU had offered special duty-free import of textile products from select countries like Pakistan under its GSP scheme, while denying similar concessions to India.
The controversial admission of Pakistan in to the scheme will render Indian textiles uncompetitive. In an attempt to push its social and environmental agenda, the EU is offering additional tariff reductions under the GSP to force developing countries to accept stricter labour standards, after it failed to push these standards at the WTO
