A smart rally in select old economy shares helped the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) sensex to open slightly better on Friday following continued buying by operators as well as retail investors.
The sensex opened at 3224.98. It then moved between an intra-day high of 3245.98 and an intra-day low of 3195.60 before closing 8 points higher at 3,228.82.
The market was fairly subdued during early trades, but late buying resulted in stocks bouncing back and ending in the positive territory.

Select software counters were steady to firm in the absence of advices from Wall Street, as the New York Stock market was closed on Thursday. Leading technology stocks improved on late buying, while second-rung tech stocks rose on speculative trades. Old economy and defensive sector stocks gained further ground, though some pivotal scrips failed to hold on to recent gains.
Meanwhile, on the National Stock Exchange (NSE), the Nifty index closed marginally (0.42 point) higher at 1,050.15. Market regulator Sebi
