f/110505_01.pdf">Click here for a detailed table of the FII investment pattern  In the first quarter ended June 2005, the overseas investors bought 478 million shares of 271 companies and sold 335 million shares of 158 companies.  In the second quarter ended September 2005, FIIs bought 872 million shares of 314 companies and sold 215 million shares of 132 companies.  "FIIs stepped up their buying in the second half. However, there is a substantial slowdown in the third quarter with FIIs turning net sellers in October. We need to wait and see whether this is a temporary blip or the FIIs have actually started withdrawing from India following the rise in interest rates in the US," said a market analyst.  FIIs investment in the first half of the year was spread across all sectors -- banking and finance, telecom, automobiles and auto ancillaries, refineries, shipping, technology, pharmaceuticals, power, fertilisers, sugar. They sold shares in FMCG, aluminium, cement, media, paper and oil explorations sectors.  There was, however, a huge sectoral churning in the first half. FIIs bought shares of automobiles, steel, textiles, paints, sugar, petrochemicals and cement in the second quarter ended September 2005, after partially booking profits in the first quarter ended June 205.  Simultaneously, they offloaded shares of engineering, packaging and paints companies in second quarter and booked profits in FMCG, aluminium, media and steel sectors in both the quarters.  During July-September, FIIs stepped up their holdings in 284 companies and pruned their exposures to 118 companies. In the first quarter, 247 companies witnessed FII holdings going up and 153 companies saw a drop in their stake.  At the end of the second quarter, FIIs held at least 10 per cent and above in one-third of the BSE 500 companies, which include all Sensex stocks. When it comes to absolute numbers, they held over 10 per cent in 168 companies in September 2005, up from 148 in June 30.  In fact, there has been a progressive rise in the FIIs holding in India Inc over the last few quarters. In March 31, 2005, they had held over 10 per cent stake in 137 companies.  Among the 30 Sensex stocks, FIIs have been holding 10 per cent and above stakes in 26 companies. Two years back, the figure was 21. FIIs hold 64.56 per cent in HDFC, 53.69 per cent in Satyam Computer, 45.48 per cent in ICICI Bank and 40 per cent in Infosys Technologies.
