Gains across the board

 The Bombay Stock Exchange's 30-stock Sensex moved up by 85.42 points, or 1.99 per cent, to close at 4,382.57, while the National Stock Exchange's 50-scrip S&P CNX Nifty appreciated by 29.75 points to end at 1,386.95.

 Gains were seen almost across the board, with banking, automobile, telecom, cement and steel stocks all benefiting. Technology stocks, which traded weak earlier in the day, also gained in the second half of session.

 State Bank of India, an index heavyweight, closed at Rs 433.60, up by 4.16 per cent over its previous close. Reliance Industries increased by 1.66 per cent to close at Rs 425.80, Hindustan Lever rose by 1.53 per cent to close at Rs 182.30 and ITC was up 0.53 per cent to close at Rs 819.15.

 In technology segment, Satyam Computer was up 2.11 per cent to close at Rs 249 and Infosys Technologies was up 0.69 per cent to close at Rs 4,545.85. HCL Technologies gained by 4.80 per cent to end at Rs 169.05.

 ICICI Bank was up 7.24 per cent to close at Rs 204.50. The stock is said to have moved up on hopes of improved results for the quarter ending September 30, 2003. More than 12.57 lakh shares were traded on BSE today.

 In cement sector, Grasim Industries was up 3.48 per cent to close at Rs 640.15, Gujarat Ambuja Cements was up 3.43 per cent to close at Rs 226, Larsen & Toubro was up 2.13 per cent to close at Rs 313.55 and ACC was up 1.34 per cent to close at Rs 196.55.

 Cipla, a drug major, was up 3.25 per cent to close at Rs 1,031.45 and Dr Reddy's Laboratories was up 0.93 per cent to close at Rs 1,066.

 Shares in Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd closed lower by 1.86 per cent at Rs 383.10. More than 1.62 lakh shares were traded on the BSE.

 Nestle India was down by 0.61 per cent to close at Rs 589 and GlaxoSmithKline Pharma was down 0.31 per cent to close at Rs 450.40.

 HFCL was frozen at its upper circuit of Rs 21.30. More than 30.41 lakh shares changed hands on the BSE.

 The stocks which posted major gains were: Bajaj Auto, up 5.84 per cent at Rs 800.65, Hughes Software, up 7.27 per cent to close at Rs 396.40, and Bharti Tele-Ventures, up 13.10 per cent at Rs 75.55.
