Exports of gems and jewellry for the first half year period of April to September 2002 increased 25.18 per cent in dollar terms and 30.06 per cent in rupee terms from the corresponding period last year. This is the highest growth reported in the first half of any year.
Increase in exports to US and higher DTC sight allocation contributed to the record rise. In value terms, exports increased to $4107.76 million (Rs.19969.60 crore) compared to $3281.52 million (Rs. 15354.13 crore), according to figures released by the Gems and Jewellry Exports Promotion Council (GJEPC).
