Gold peaks at Rs 21,050/10 gm; silver touches 30-yr record

Gold prices rose to an all-time high of Rs 21,050 per ten gram here today, on brisk buying for the ongoing marriage season amid firming global trend.

Silver also climbed a new peak at Rs 45,500 per kg on rising demand from industrial units and coin makers.

Trading activity gathered momentum after gold in global markets, which normally set a price trend at the domestic front, rose to a record-high of $1,428.70 an ounce.

Silver, too, was at 30-year high of $30.32 an ounce.

Market sentiment was upbeat on retailers and jewellers buying to accommodate the current marriage season demand. 

The gold of 99.9 and 99.5 per cent purity gained by Rs 50 each to Rs 21,050 and Rs 20,930 per ten gram, respectively. Sovereign followed suit and went up by Rs 50 to record level of Rs 16,800 per piece of eight gram.

Silver ready, too, in line with the general firming trend, became expensive by Rs 300 at the new record of Rs 45,500 per kg, followed by weekly-based delivery, which gained by Rs 165 at Rs 44,980 per kg.

Meanwhile, silver coins maintained their record levels at Rs 49,000 for buying and Rs 49,100 for selling of 100 pieces.
