Groundnut Oil Firm; Sugar Dips, Bullion Follows Suit

A steady trend continued in groundnut oil, while most of the other edible oils ruled easy-to-steady at the wholesale oils and oilseeds market, Turbhe, Navi Mumbai, yesterday. Imported palmolein ruled firm.

In the futures market, the December '98 contract opened lower and ruled steady at the same level towards closing.

Groundnut oil was nominally quoted at Rs 615 per 10 kg. In other oils, linseed oil and kardi oil improved by Rs 5 and Rs 10 to Rs 470 and Rs 660 per 10 kg, respectively. Sesame oil advanced by Rs 20 at Rs 440 per 10 kg. Ricebran oil and sunflower oil expeller eased by Rs 3 and Rs 5 to Rs 227 and Rs 415 per 10 kg, respectively.

Copra oil white declined by Rs 15 to Rs 535 per 10 kg, while soya oil refined looked up by Rs 2 at Rs 392 per 10 kg. Imported palmolein ruled overall steady at Rs 382 per 10 kg. In the futures section, the December contract opened Rs 30 lower at Rs 1,690 a quintal and ruled overall steady at the same level. In oilseeds, kardi seeds and nigerseeds declined by Rs 50 and Rs 25 to Rs 1,850 and Rs 1,950 per quintal, respectively. Castorseeds Madras and Maharashtra declined by Rs 62 to Rs 2,040 and Rs 2,034 per quintal, respectively.

Sugar: Sugar prices faced market resistance at higher level and ruled easy-to-subdued yesterday. Both the grades of sugar ruled easy on dull demand.

Sugar S-30 eased to Rs 1,455/1,480 a quintal, while sugar M-30 softened to Rs 1,475/1,545 a quintal. Meanwhile, sugar for the check-post deliveries were quoted higher at Rs 1,437/1,447 a quintal for S-30 and Rs 1,456/1,470 a quintal for M-30.

Non-ferrous metals: An easy-to-steady trend witnessed in the local non-ferrous metals market yesterday.

In the scraps section, copper heavy declined by 50 paise, while copper utensils, brass utensils and brass sheet cuttings eased by 25 paise each to Rs 101.00, Rs 91.50, Rs 84.50 and Rs 86.50 a kg, respectively.

Meanwhile, aluminium utensils were nominally quoted at Rs 63.50 a kg.

In virgin metals, copper wirebar softened by 50 paise at Rs 115.50 a kg.

Meanwhile, all the other metals were nominally quoted as under: aluminium ingots Rs 86, zinc slabs Rs 78, lead ingots Rs 45.50, tin slabs Rs 386 and nickel cathodes Rs 255 a kg, respectively.

Bullion: An easy trend was noticed in both the precious metals in the local bullion market yesterday.

In white metals, silver .999 and .916 declined by Rs 15 each to Rs 7,835 and Rs 7,725 a kg, respectively. Delhi advices indicated modest trend.

In yellow metals, standard gold and 22-carat gold softened by Rs 10 each to Rs 4,350 and Rs 4,025 per 10 grams, respectively. Gold biscuit prices also declined by Rs 100 at Rs 50,500 per piece.
