In an encouraging sign for sugarcane crop in Haryana, area under it has registered a significant rise during the autumn sowing in 2009.
According to agriculture officials, during the autumn season farming, area under the crop registered around 18,000 hectares as compared to 5,000 hectares in the corresponding period last year.
Sugarcane cultivation is generally done in two seasons, autumn and spring. The autumn season planting spreads from October till December while the spring cropping is done from February till April.
According to Haryana agriculture officials, the area under sugarcane crop for autumn has increased to 18,000 hectares (45,000 acres).
Last year the area under sugarcane crop area during autumn season was 5,000 hectares (14.000 acre).
Buoyed by the increase in sugarcane acreage, the officials maintained they were eyeing sugarcane area in Haryana to cross 100,000 hectares by 2011-12.
