Investors lost a whopping an over Rs seven lakh crore in just one session today as the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE)'s Sensex corrected by over 1,500 points in line with a global market crash, following concerns over economic slowdown in China, the world’s second largest economy.
At close, the S&P BSE Sensex was down 1,624.51 points or 5.94% at 25,741.56, dragging the total investor wealth below the Rs 100 lakh crore mark today.
The investors' wealth measured by the total BSE market capitalisation (m-cap), declined by Rs 704,256 crore to Rs 95,28,536 crore today as against Rs 102,32,792 crore on Friday.
The 30-share Sensex fell for the third consecutive day, down 2,190 points or 7.8% -- since August 19. The total m-cap of the BSE has declined by Rs 9,42,557 crore from Rs 104,76,020 crore on Wednesday.
Reliance Industries (Rs 25,371 crore) and Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (Rs 24,469 crore) have lost more than Rs 20,000 crore in a single day.
Tata Consultancy Services, State Bank of India, Axis Bank, Infosys, HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank have lost more than Rs 10,000 crore each in m-cap.
Tata Consultancy Services, State Bank of India, Axis Bank, Larsen & Toubro, Tata Motors, Infosys, Coal India, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank and Housing Development Finance Corporation have lost more than Rs 5,000 crore each in m-cap.
