Jamnagar to export 3000 tonne chicory

Jamnagar will export 3,000 tonne of chicory this year owing to good rainfall and a record crop harvested through 2,500 acre of cultivation, said the district agriculture officer Naresh Kathad.

Yield per bigha is 7,000 kg this year, he added. Kathad said chicory's share in coffee production is 30 per cent and Jamnagar was known forits quality chicory crop, but due to poor rain the crop was almost vanished from the district since last three years.

He said that, in India 1956 first crop of chicory was taken by, Jamnagar's farmer Jethabhai Kesvala on demand of Brooke Bond company.

In India, Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh are the two centers for chicory crop. Nitin Kesvala, says that, Nestle's and Hindustan Lever buy the chicory produced in Jamanagar district for their coffee and chocolate brands.
