Ahmednagar-based non-government organisation Govind Gramin Prathishthan has big plans for jatropha cultivation. The organisation started jatropha plantation during monsoons. By now, around 20 lakh jatropha plants have grown in the district. |
Gulabrao Kale, president, Govind Gramin Prathisthan, expects at least five tonne jatropha seed output this year. "With this, we would soon start pilot project for bio-diesel production. We also plan a cooperative bio-diesel factory in future," said Gulabrao, the force behind the project. |
Kale undertook jatropha plantation under a programme funded by the government. |
"Bio-diesel is going to be an integral part of the vehicle industry and jatropha plantation could bring an excellent self-employment opportunity for farmers. A farmer could start earning profits within three years of plantation," said Kale. |
The NGO is ready to supply jatropha seeds to other organisations once its pilot project gets some success. It is also willing to supply the seeds to farmers in different parts of the country. A jatropha plant has a life cycle of 50 years. |
A mixture of CCT and sheep fecal remains acts as fertiliser for jatropha in drought-prone areas. The plantation is also good for soil as it improves the soil quality and helps in maintaining environmental balance. The plant is used for preparation of Ayurvedic medicines. |
