Industry body Assocham today sought the Prime Minister's Office intervention in restricting export of minerals under the new mining policy being considered by the government.

At a meeting attended by Minister of State in the PMO Prithviraj Chauhan here, Assocham senior vice-president Sajjan Jindal, who is also a leading steel producer, made out a strong case for capping export of minerals, mainly iron ore.

Chauhan said the Hoda Committee's report was being examined by the government at the highest level. He expressed the hope that the issue would be resolved soon.

In the wake of rise in international iron ore prices, the Indian steel producers have been demanding capping export of ore to meet their growing demands.

"If the government does not revise the Mineral Policy, we will become a net importer of iron ore and other useful minerals... This in turn will pulverise the Indian steel sector leading to huge unemployment," Jindal said.

He cited that owing to "generous" export of manganese ore in the past, the country was now being forced to import the ore to meet its own requirement.

"We need to devise policies, which will support major utilisation of iron ore and other materials within India. This is important as the steel sector is looking up and consumption of steel within the country was growing by more than 15 to 16 per cent," Jindal argued.
