Kajaria took charge from G M Singhvi. Before Singhvi R K Poddar had served as chairman for a brief period. Though the official tenure for chairmanship was one year, the industry believed that it was likely to be extended.
Kajaria said, the impending strike in the jute industry was the first issue on the agenda before him. The trade unions were threatening to go on strike and were expected to serve notice soon.
The main issue was the tripartite agreement which sought to lin wages with productivity. The unions were not willing to implement productivity linkes wages.
The other committee members appointed were G D Bangur, Ashutosh Bhagat, Sunil Jhunjhunwala, Sanjay Hada, A K Kankaria, Alok Kumar, A K Lihia, Manish Poddar, R K Poddar, R S Poddar, Govind Sarda, Jagdish Sarda and G M Singhvi.
