 Displaying volatility, the market ended lower as selling emerged during the last one hour. After a firm opening, the Sensex gained ground in early trades following a recovery in global markets, but sustained selling pressure during mid-afternoon trades dragged the market down.

 The NSE S&P CNX Nifty index lost 18.30 points to close at 1,522.30.
