Late surge on volatile day

 In a highly volatile day, the Sensex touched a low of 4,738.12 and a high of 4,867.91 in intra-day trades. It gained nearly 30 points in the last half-hour of trading.

 Heavyweights State Bank of India (up 2.95 per cent to close at Rs 488.15), Reliance Industries (up 2.82 per cent at Rs 480), Hindustan Lever (up 1.71 per cent at Rs 189.95) and ITC (up 0.59 per cent to end the day at Rs 881.85) contributed to the recovery in the Sensex.

 Satyam Computer closed at Rs 292.85, up 1.84 per cent over its previous close. Infosys Tech closed at Rs 4,736.60, up 0.48 per cent.

 Tata Steel closed at Rs 343.50, up 5.32 per cent over its previous close. More than 87.69 lakh Tata Steel shares were traded on the BSE today.

 Bajaj Auto was up 4.96 per cent at Rs 890.20 and Tata Motors was up 3.58 per cent to settle at Rs 380.30. Hero Honda Motors finished at Rs 337.75, up 0.70 per cent over its previous close.

 Reliance Energy was up 2.62 per cent to close at Rs 422.65. Zee Telefilms closed at Rs 135.65, up 3.55 per cent over its previous finish. More than 17.31 lakh Zee Telefilms shares were traded on the BSE today.

 Among pharmaceutical stocks, Cipla was up 2.43 per cent to close at Rs 1,117 and Ranbaxy Labs was up 2 per cent at Rs 1,049.45. Dr Reddy
