Shares of companies in the logistics sector were trading mixed after the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday passed the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Constitutional Amendment Act.
At 09:58 am, Container Corporation, Snowman Logistics, GATI, Sical Logistics and Arshiya were trading lower by up to 3% after surging nearly 5% on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) in early morning trade.
However, Blue Dart Express, Allcargo Logistics, Gateway Distriparks and Transport Corporation of India were trading higher between 2%-3% on the BSE.
Biswanath Bhattacharya, Partner – Infrastructure, Government and Healthcare practice, KPMG in India said the implementation of GST will lead to the reconfiguration of existing logistics networks over time, and thus the creation or development of new or expanded logistics hubs, the locations for which will be driven by commercial and economic efficiency, rather than regulatory considerations.
With the formation of Greenfield or brownfield logistics hubs, some of the transport linkages may need to be redrawn or their capacity expanded to align to future traffic patterns. For example, what is presently a small hub may be expanded significantly due to location efficiency considerations. This may lead to a need for broader roads leading to the hub, or even new rail connectivity, said Bhattacharya.
