Long-only AIFs outperform long-short funds in FY22, shows data

Long-only alternative investment funds (AIFs) outperformed long-short funds in the financial year 2021-22 (FY22). The former gave an average category returns of 30.6 per cent, against the latter’s 13.6 per cent, shows the data from PMS Bazaar.

Twenty-five of the 32 long-only funds managed to beat the Nifty50 return of 18.8 per cent during the year, while only two of the 12 long-short strategies were able to beat the benchmark. 

Rise Equities Managers’ Aequitas Equity Scheme I, a long-only fund, was the top performer for the year, with returns of 99.5 per cent. Roha Asset Manager’s Roha Emerging Companies Fund and Abakkus Asset Manager’s Emerging Opportunities Fund I, both long-only funds, were the other top performers with returns of 78.2 per cent and 58.5 per cent, respectively.

Assets of the AIF industry stood at Rs 6.1 trillion at the end of the December 2021 — a 38 per cent rise YoY. Category III AIFs had raised commitments to the tune of Rs 0.63 trillion as of December 31, 2021. There were commitments of Rs 4.95 trillion for Category II AIFs and Rs 0.5 trillion for Category I.
