HLL (up 9.52 per cent at Rs 163.30), ONGC (up 5.45 per cent at Rs 968.15) and ITC (up 3.75 per cent at Rs 1603.90) were the other big gainers of the week.  The gains in these stocks added 59.35 points to the overall index. Only three stocks ended the week with losses. They were HDFC Bank (down 2.43 per cent at Rs 580.25), Bhel (down 2.96 per cent at Rs 849.40) and HDFC (down 1.17 per cent at Rs 851.20). The losses in these counters shaved off 12.93 points from the overall index.  Buying interest extended across sectors last week, which led to most of the sectoral indices closing with gains. The BSE Oil & Gas Index (up 5.37 per cent) and The BSE FMCG Index (up 5.08 per cent) have been the big gainers, while the BSE Capital Goods Index was the only one to report losses for the week.  Gains in heavyweights Reliance Industries, ONGC and Gail provided the momentum for the Oil & Gas Index, while top stocks HLL and ITC drove the FMCG Index upwards. As far as the Capital Gods Index was concerned, losses in engineering major Bhel (down 2.94 per cent at Rs 849.28), which has a 20 per cent weightage in index proved decisive, dragged the index.  The US markets suffered a terrible week, with leading indices closing with substantial losses. The Dow Jones Industrials lost more than 100 points for the second straight session on Friday as investors worried about the rising oil prices and its impact on corporate profits and overall economy.  The Dow Jones industrials ended the week down 3.06 per cent, finishing at 10,297.84, while the tech-laden Nasdaq fell 1.76 per cent during the week, to close at 2,053.27. Stocks crashed in a broad-based sell off after crude oil prices briefly hit the $60 a barrel mark.

What to expect this week  The sentiment is likely to be good going forward, though some market players did not rule out a correction from the current all-time high levels. Reports of a deficient monsoon are also likely to have an impact on the markets.  The June 2005 derivatives contracts are due to expire on Thursday (June 30, 2005), which could lead to volatility. The markets will also be keenly watching the US Federal Reserve meeting scheduled for June 29 and June 30.  Several companies, including Pfizer, Ceat, Aurobindo Pharma, IPCA Labs and Ispat Industries, are also scheduled to announce their March quarter results this week.

Reliance Capital was among the big gainers of last week, as the markets surged on the back of the settlement between the Ambani brothers. The stock closed Friday at its life-time high levels of Rs 341.32, up 44.78 per cent for the week.

Volumes at the counter also shot through the roof, with the average weekly turnover surging by more than 600 per cent. The scrip has gained more than 140 per cent since the start of the year. The stock performance was also helped by an overwhelming response to the company's preferential issue.

FIIs have bid for $1 billion worth of preferential equity as against the offer for $75 million worth of equity. Post-issue, the company is expected to be among the top three companies in the private financial services and banking sector.
