Markets closed on account of Dr B R Ambedkar Jayanti

On Wednesday, FMCG and consumer durables shares are likely to be in action amid lower-than-expected consumer price inflation

Indian equity, forex, money and commodity markets will remain closed today on account of Dr. Baba Saheb Ambedkar Jayanti.

On Monday, benchmark share indices ended at their highest closing level in over five weeks led by index heavyweight Reliance Industries while capital goods shares rallied led by L&T after it signed a MoU with France-based AREVA for nuclear power project.

The 30-share Sensex ended up 165 points at 29,044 and the 50-share Nifty gained 54 points to close at 8,834.

In the broader markets, the BSE Mid-cap index ended up 0.3% while the CNX Mid-cap index ended up 0.2% at 13,651 after hitting a record high of 13,690. The BSE Small-cap index ended up 0.8%.

ECONOMY

Consumer Price Index (CPI)-based inflation eased to 5.17 per cent in March, the lowest in three months, aided by lower food prices. For February, CPI inflation stood at 5.37 per cent, January 5.19 per cent and March 2014 8.25 percent.

Analysts polled by Reuters had expected retail inflation for March this year to stand at 5.5 per cent.

GLOBAL MARKETS

Asian markets witness sluggish trades today after The Monetary Authority Singapore kept its policy stance unchanged disappointing expectations of a monetary easing while subdued US markets also weighed on investor sentiment. Japanese shares continued to remain steady with the benchmark Nikkei struggling to stay above 20,000. The Nikkei was trading flat while shares in Hong Kong witnessed profit taking after the benchmark Hang Seng surged nearly 12% in the past five trading sessions. The Hang Seng was down 1% while China's Shanghai Composite and Singapore's Straits Times were trading flat with positive bias.

Major US stock indices ended lower on Monday on concerns that the strong dollar and weakening crude oil prices could impact earnings of major US corporations with global operations. Corporates will start announcing their first quarter (January-March) earnigns this week. The Dow Jones industrial average ended down 0.5% below the 18,000 mark at 17,977.04, the broader S&P 500 ended down 10 points at 2,092.43 and the tech-laden Nasdaq ended down 8 points at 4,988.25.
