The markets contined to witness a downward spiral as the Sensex shed 202 points at 19,494 while the Nifty lost 58 points at 5,845.
Market breadth was very negative with 2437 declines and 402 advances.
Gainers on the Sensex were Infosys Technologies, Jindal Steel and TCS, all up 1%, while the top losers were Reliance Communications, Cipla and Hindalco Industries, all down 4%.
All the sectoral indices were treading in negative territory except the IT and Teck indices. IT stocks continued their strong performance, and the index was up 1%. The Teck index was up marginally by 2 points.
Oil & Gas stocks continued to underperform because of increasing crude prices touching nearly $89 a barrel.
The Consumer Durables index continued to drag negatively down 4%, while the Realty and Auto indices saw a drop of 2% each.
