After a quiet opening the Sensex jumped to touch a high of 18,263 up 86 points from the day's opening. However subsequently the index pared its initial gains and is now at 18,204 down 14 points and the Nifty is at 5457 down three points.
Among the BSE Sectoral Indices the Auto index is up 0.4% and is the top gainer on the charts followed by Consumer Durables up 0.3%.
The major movers in the Auto space are Tata Motors gaining 4.5% at its lifetime high of Rs 1,012 after the company reported a consolidated net profit of Rs 1,989 crore for the first quarter ended June 2010. It is followed by Cummins India and MRF up 1% each.
On the Consumer Durables front, Rajesh Exports has added 3.5% followed by Gitanjali Gems, Videocon Industries and Blue Star.
The other major scrip in news, Bharti Airtel has reported a 32% fall in quarterly profit. The stock is currently trading at Rs 322 down 0.4%.
The Smallcap index is up 0.3%, and the midcap index is up 0.1% are relatively performing better as compared to the bechmark index which is down 0.1%.
On the Sensex-30 stocks, the major gainers are Tata Motors gaining 4.5% followed by Hindalco which added 2%, Hindustan Unilever up 1.4% and Tata Power up 0.8%
HDFC, Cipla, Wipro, ITC and Mahindra & Mahindra are down 1% each.
The market breadth is positive with 1,359 stocks advancing as compared to 1,162 declines.
