Markets opened in the green today, following cues from global indices. The Sensex opened at 18,564 - up 57 points. The index was up 130 points at 18,636.
The Nifty was up 41 points at 5,587.
On Thursday, the Dow gained 30 points to 12,318. The S&P 500 rose 4 points to 1,340. The Nasdaq added 6 points to 2,831.
Asian markets were in green this morning. The Hang Seng gained 124 points at 23,426. Seoul Composite jumped 1.3% to 2,003. Taiwan Weighted added 2% to 8,842. Nikkei, however was flat at 10,839 while Shanghai Composite slipped 0.6% to 2,909.
Back home on Thursday, the markets continued their good showing for the fifth consecutive session to end higher by more than a percent on the back of a drop in food inflation. The Sensex ended at 18,506, higher by 205 points and the Nifty ended comfortably above the crucial 5500 mark at 5546, up 64 points.
Food inflation fell to 11.05 per cent in the first week of February on arrival of fresh rabi crops in the markets, particularly onions and potatoes, and on the expectations of bumper production of wheat and pulses.
The stocks to watch today include Nestle, SAIL, ONGC, Reliance Communications and L&T Infra.
HDFC Bank gained 2.2% at Rs 2,233. BHEL, DLF, HDFC, Hero Honda and Larsen & Toubro jumped 1-2% each. Hindalco was up 1%. Other gainers included SBI, Sterlite, Reliance Communications and ITC.
However, Bharti Airtel, Tata Motors and Mahindra & Mahindra slipped 0.5% each.
