The markets have opened in the green, in line with their Asian counterparts. The Sensex is quoting at 16047, higher by 125 points and the Nifty is at 4798, up 40 points.
The Asian markets had opened higher, with the Hang Seng adding 270 points and Nikkei strengthening by 31 points in opening trades. The US markets had a subdued session, though, with the Dow Jones shedding 20 points and Nasdaq losing three points.
The leading gainers on the Sensex are Jaiprakash Associates (strengthened by Rs 3 or 2.3% at Rs 131), Hindalco (hardened by Rs 2 or 2% at Rs 139) and ICICI Bank (firmed up by Rs 16 or 2% at Rs 816). DLF, Tata Steel and M&M are the other significant gainers.
And index heavyweight Reliance has added Rs 7 or 0.7% at Rs 992.
Bharti Airtel is the only Sensex loser, having shed Rs 2 or 0.7% at Rs 312.
The market breadth is strong. Out of 1454 stocks traded on the BSE, there are 1162 advancing stocks as against 263 declines.
