Markets open lower

The markets have opened soft. The Sensex is quoting at 15896, lower by 38 points, and the Nifty is at 4749, lower by 10 points.

The US markets had a weak day; Dow shed 103 points and Nasdaq lost 15 points. And the Asian markets are mixed; Hang Seng opened stronger by 92 points, while Nikkei shed 44 points.

The top losers on the Sensex are ICICI Bank (weaker by Rs 9 or 1.1% at Rs 796), Hero Honda (down Rs 16 or 1% at Rs 1567) and HDFC (lower by Rs 23 or 0.9% at Rs 2375). Index heavyweight, Reliance has shed Rs 9 or 0.9% at Rs 986.

On the gainer's side, Hindalco has strengthened by Rs 1 or 1% at Rs 137, Tata Steel has added Rs 4 or 0.8% at Rs 538 and Reliance Communications is up by Rs 1 or 0.5% at Rs 169.

The market breadth is positive. Out of 512 stocks traded on the BSE, there are 326 advancing stocks as against 174 declines.
