Multi Commodity Exchange of India (MCX) has entered into an agreement with University of Mumbai to set up MCX Chair to promote research in commodities.

The pact was signed between Dr Vijay Khole, honourary vice-chancellor of Mumbai University, and Jignesh Shah, managing director of MCX, in presence of eminent personalities of the commodities sector.

"MCX's support for research in commodities is an important spin-off, which would help build professionals for the Indian commodities sector and strengthen the trading community by sharpening functional competence," said Shah.

"Tying up with Mumbai University would provide accreditation for participants and contribute to the development of the commodities market," he added.

MCX announced two yearly PhD fellowship scholarships in honour of Dr Madhookar Pavaskar "" specialist in cotton "" and Madhusudan Daga "" specialist in gold "" to commemorate their invaluable contribution towards the commodities market.

With this initiative, MCX has essayed to attract greater participation from the academicians to be a part of the commodities market, which offers immense growth opportunities.

"This is the first time that a market-oriented organisation has come forward and offered an endowment to Mumbai University to help build an academician. This is a unique experiment to have a commodity chair in the department of economics," said Dr Khole.

"The desire of MCX is appreciable, as this will help produce talents with market orientation. Besides reading books and papers, the students would also get practical knowledge on how to deal with commodities. Such studies would help the university develop new courses in the syllabi," he added.

"Investment in knowledge is the most important need for the country like ours, especially when commodities require experts' brain," said Dr Kewal Ram, ex-chairman of Forward Market Commission.

"The time has come to revive the market of commodities, which was eliminated because of lack of policies," he added. Double impact
