"Metal stocks rallied on renewed buying interest from institutions while short covering was also seen ahead of October derivatives expiry tomorrow," said Alex Mathews, Head-Research, Geojit BNP Paribas.
Hindalco was the top Sensex gainer up nearly 6% while Tata Steel gained nearly 5% and Jindal Steel was up 3%.
Sesa Sterlite rebounded from its day's lows and was up 1.5% after the company today reported earnings which were in line with estimates. Net profit for the September quarter was up 15% at Rs 1,658 crore compared with Rs 1,436 crore in the last year's quarter.
