Markets continued to trade firm in late morning trades led by financials while capital goods shares gained on hopes of new orders from the defence sector.
At 11:40AM, the 30-share Sensex was up 124 points at 28,480 and the 50-share Nifty gained 44 points at 8,610.
Meanwhile, foreign portfolio investors continued to remain sellers in Indian shares with net sale of Rs 1261.19 crore on Tuesday, as per provisional data.
Most sectoral indices on the BSE were trading positive with Capital Goods index leading with 1.4% gain followed by Healthcare, Bankex and Consumer Durables among others.
L&T is the top Sensex gainer, up 2.1%. The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has selected two consortia from the dozen companies invited to bid in November 2013. One is a consortium between Larsen & Toubro (L&T) and Tata Power, and the other between Rolta and Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL). BEL was up 2%, Tata Power gained 1% while Rolta was up 5.4%.
In the financial segment, ICICI Bank was up nearly 2%. The banking major has launched 'Pockets' a mobile application which can be used for various payments. Other gainers include, Axis Bank, HDFC and SBI among others.
Asian Paints was up 2% after the company said its Singapore-based subsidiary Berger International Limited has completed acquisition of 51% stake in Kadisco Paint and Adhesive Industry Share Company, Ethiopia, for a consideration of US$ 18.95 million (appx. Rs. 117.6 crores) in cash.
In the pharma segment, Sun Pharma was up 1.4%, Dr Reddy's Labs was up 0.8%.
Other gainers include, TCS, Reliance Industries, HUL, Coal India and Maruti Suzuki among others.
ONGC was the top Sensex loser down 2.4% while Tata Motors, Bharti Airtel, M&M, Wipro, Infosys, BHEL and Sesa Sterlite were down 1-1/5% each on profit taking.
Among other shares, Shares of Entertainment Network (India) has surged 15% to Rs 635 on NSE after the company said it is exploring merger and acquisition (M&A) opportunities in the FM broadcasting space.
In the broader market, BSE Mid-cap and Small-cap indices were up 0.8-1% each.
Market breadth was positive with 1,388 gainers and 908 losers on the BSE.
