Nifty index ranks among top 10 global futures

S&P CNX Nifty Index Futures figures among the top 10 stock-based derivatives contracts by volume globally, as per data compiled by the Futures Industry Association (FAI). This is significant, considering that the contract was launched in 2000.
 
Among all derivative contracts (such as currency derivatives, bond derivatives) traded globally, trading volume of the NSE index featured among the top 20 list.
 
The index futures was also the biggest gainer among all derivative contracts traded on global exchanges during the first six months of 2006. Traded volumes in the index increased 139.2 per cent to 38.35 million in January-June 2006 from 16.24 million contracts in the year-ago period.
 
Korea's Kospi 200 Index Options was the top traded derivatives contract globally, with a turnover of 1,208.70 million in first six months of this year, an increase of 13 per cent from 1,069.42 million in the same period last year.
 
In the number two position is Chicago Mercantile Exchange's (CME) Eurodollar Futures contracts at 244.63 million, which grew by 17.7 per cent from last year.
 
The derivative contracts for Euro-bund Futures contracts at Eurex, a top derivatives exchange in Europe, stood at the number third position at 173.30 million contracts, up by 5.9 per cent from previous year's 163.69 million contracts.
 
The TIIE 28-Day Interbank Rate Futures contracts at the Mexder or the Mexican Derivatives Exchange gained by five spots from last year to the fourth spot this year at 143.40 million contracts.
 
The TIIE 28-Day Interbank Rate Futures also was the second biggest gainer, after NSE's S&P CNX Nifty Index Futures, with a growth rate of 116 per cent from last year.
 
The other most popular contracts worldwide are Eurodollar Options of CME (140.41 million contracts), E-mini S&P500 Index Futures of CME (129.45 million), 10-year T-Note Futures of Chicago Board of Trade (124.92 million), DJ Euro Stoxx 50 Index Futures, Eurex (108.36 million) and Euribor Futures of Euronext.liffe (101.78 million).
