In detailed release issued by it, the markets watchdog said that out of the total net investment of Rs 72,965 crore in equities as on September 30, 2003, 84 per cent is held by mutual funds, asset management companies, investment companies, banks, and pensions funds among others.
The remaining 16 per cent is held by others, which could include NRIs.
According to an analysis of the data collected by Sebi - out of 508 entities which are registered as FIIs with the regulator as of September 30, 2003, only 12 registered FIIs have participatory notes (PNs) outstanding as on 30th September, 2003.
The total value of underlying investment in equity represented by the PNs is Rs 19,125 crore.
