Nutmeg and mace prices have witnessed a steep rise in the last couple of weeks on reports of crop damage. |
According to leading traders, the market is currently in a buoyant mood and the prices are likely to move up further due to low supply to major markets such as Kalady. |

Continuous rains for the last one month have disrupted the harvesting, and according to growers, a major chunk of the production is damaged due to moisture. K A Stephen, a leading trader, said the terminal market was experiencing serious shortage of supply as growers were hoarding their produce. |
The total production in the current season is expected to be lower by 20 per cent due to incessant rainfall during the last flowering season (November " December, 2006). |
The country's average annual production is 2500-2800 tonnes. Anticipating a serious shortfall in supply during the off-season, stocking is very active which is further hitting the supply. |
The mace prices have increased to Rs 420-450 from Rs 350-380 a kg a fortnight back. The prices of unshelled nutmeg have been quoting around Rs 200-220 a kg today, up Rs 50-60, while shelled nutmeg has edged to Rs 125 from Rs 90. |
The market is poised for yet another bull rally like the one that took place two years ago, when prices of mace touched Rs 700 a kilo. This time, sources expect, the prices to even beat the Rs 700-mark. Exporters are not in a position to procure nutmeg because of the poor quality of the produce. |
The traders in the north are also not active in the market and are not showing urgency in stocking for Diwali season because of the sudden upsurge in prices. |
