Moving in a range of 70 points, the Sensex touched a low of 4,735.77 and a high of 4,805.72 in intra-day trades.
The NSE S&P CNX Nifty Index rose by 18.40 points to 1,516.85.The NSE fu tures and options (F&O) segment recorded an all-time high turnover of Rs 12,846.33 crore. Cash segment turnover on the BSE was at Rs 2,596.58 crore and on the NSE it was at Rs 5,895.54 crore.
The market witnessed a relatively less volatile trading session. Old economy stocks pulled the market up even as the October series futures contracts expired today.
Players were expecting volatility due to unwinding of outstanding positions in the F&O segment but rollover of positions to the next-month series in the last couple of sessions eased the pressure.
Foreign institutional investors were net buyers at Rs 223.50 crore, while mutual funds were net sellers at Rs 75.60 crore on October 29.
Advances at 716 companies outpaced losers at 557 companies. Bhel was up 8.28 per cent to close at Rs 461. Reliance Energy was up 7.37 per cent to close at Rs 448.65.
Gujarat Ambuja Cements was up 3.56 per cent to close at Rs 244.05, Grasim was up 2.08 per cent to Rs 804.65, Larsen & Toubro was up 0.86 per cent to close at Rs 392.90 and ACC was up 0.57 per cent to close at Rs 204.60.
Tata Steel was up 5.23 per cent to close at Rs 347.90. Steel Authority of India looked up 5.64 per cent to close at Rs 44.95.
