Pharma funds top weekly returns

Sector-specific news that pushed up share prices of some pharmaceutical companies led to pharma funds registering the highest average returns of 1.74 per cent across all scheme categories for the week ended Friday.
 
Companies like Cadila Healthcare, Aurobindo Pharma and Orchid Chemicals and Pharmaceuticals received approval from the US Food and Drug Administration for various drugs last week.
 
Among the five pharma funds, Reliance Pharma posted the highest returns of 4.30 per cent. Franklin Pharma followed with 1.67 per cent returns. Magnum Pharma gave the lowest returns of 0.20 per cent last week.

Bombay Stock Exchange's Sensex and National Stock Exchange's Nifty last week rose 0.70 per cent and 0.64 per cent respectively. Diversified funds posted average returns of 0.83 per cent. Technology and auto funds were the only two categories among equity schemes, which ended in negative terrain.
 
While rupee appreciation continued to hit IT shares, auto shares suffered on the back of low sales due to hardened interest rates.
 
Two auto funds - UTI Auto Sector and JM Auto Sector last week gave -0.72 per cent and -1.08 per cent returns respectively.
 
The gold exchange traded funds witnessed a fall to end with -0.96 per cent returns last week from 0.19 per cent the week before.
 
Among debt funds, medium and long-term gilt schemes continued to be the lone category to register negative average returns last week.
 
The benchmark 10-year 8.07 per cent, 2017 gilt closed 0.08 per cent up on the week to close at Rs 99.50 (yield-to-maturity 8.1446 per cent) on Friday.
