A public interest litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Lucknow Bench of Allahabad High Court today by Sardar V M Singh of Rashtriya Kisan Mazdoor Sangathan over sugarcane arrears on sugar mills in Uttar Pradesh.

The petitioner has prayed for immediate settlement of arrears, 15% interest payment over delay and relief to the cane farmers on their agricultural loans until their dues are paid by the mills.

The PIL is likely to be heard on April 24 by the HC, sources told Business Standard.

The petitioner has also affixed a Supreme Court order with the PIL, which says if the arrears are not settled within 14 days, recovery certificates (RCs) be issued automatically lest the officials should be held responsible.

The PIL makes the state and the cane commissioner as defendants.
