The National Stock Exchange (NSE) Nifty Index lost 24.05 points to close at 1,844.05. |

Selling was seen across the board with the BSE capital goods index losing 2.21 per cent, PSU index down 2.1 per cent, consumer durables index falling 2.04 per cent and the IT sector index down 1.6 per cent. Turnover in the cash segment of the BSE was at Rs 2,199.48 crore and on the NSE was at Rs 4,808.38 crore. |

Opening firm, the Sensex witnessed selling pressure initially in select large cap counters but eventually the rest of the market followed. This was reflected by the breadth of the market, with losers outpacing gainers 1,070:705. |

"Players booked profit ahead of the general elections," said a dealer. He added that the undertone was positive with optimistic expectations from corporate results. |

Heavyweights Reliance Industries was down 2.2 per cent to Rs 552.45 and SBI fell 2.09 per cent to Rs 629.10. |

Bhel fell 4.31 per cent to Rs 612.30, HPCL was down 2.2 per cent to Rs 500.40, ONGC was down 1.74 per cent to Rs 849.55 and MTNL was down 1.06 per cent to Rs 150. |

Tata Motors fell 3.52 per cent to Rs 487.75, Bajaj Auto was down 1.62 per cent to Rs 930.65 and Hero Honda Motor was down 1.24 per cent to Rs 488.75. |

Grasim was down 2.51 per cent to Rs 1,143.50, ACC was down 2.24 per cent to Rs 270.20, Gujarat Ambuja Cements fell 2.14 per cent to Rs 320.15 and L&T was down 1.74 per cent to Rs 591.55. |

Ranbaxy Labs gained 2.72 per cent to Rs 1,055.35 and Cipla was up 0.64 per cent to Rs 1,249.70, while Dr Reddy's Labs fell 1.28 per cent to Rs 905.30. ICICI Bank gained 2.62 per cent to Rs 299.85 and Corporation Bank was up 4.84 per cent to Rs 333.50. |
