Potato prices surged by Rs 5.80 to Rs 636.40 per quintal in futures trade today, as speculators enlarged their positions on pick-up in seasonal demand in the spot market.

Fall in arrivals from producing regions further fuelled the uptrend.

At the Multi Commodity Exchange counter, potato for delivery in March moved up by Rs 5.80, or 0.94 per cent, to Rs 636.40 per quintal, with an open interest of just one lot.

The potato for delivery in April traded higher by Rs 4.90, or 0.80 per cent, to Rs 618.10 per quintal, with a business turnover of two lots.

Market analysts said the rise in potato prices at futures market was attributed to pick-up in seasonal demand against shortage of arrivals in the physical market, which helped potato futures prices to improve.
