After Friday's 84-point surge, the Sensex jumped another 75 points to close at a new lifetime high. The first quarter results of TCS powered a rally in software majors and spurts in Hero Honda and Bajaj Auto helped the benchmark index to close at 7347.10.
 
The Nifty went up 21.45 points to 2234. The market breadth was strong with 1,921 stocks advancing as against 609 stocks declining.
 
The BSE Small-cap and the BSE Mid-Cap indices exhibited strong surges. The Small-cap index was up 2.11 per cent to 4925.18 while the Mid-cap index closed 1.7 per cent up at 3661.
 
Two of the PSUs, ITI and HMT zoomed up more than 20 per cent. Turnover on the BSE was lower than the previous day's turnover at Rs 3,589.59 crore. Turnover on the NSE also went down to Rs 6,377 crore.
 
All the indices except the BSE Oil & Gas index ended positive on Monday. The IT index was the biggest gainer. The index was up 3.10 per cent to 2732.60 and the BSE Teck index was up 2.53 per cent.
 
Among other major gainers were-BSE Auto index (1.76 per cent), the BSE Capital Goods index (1.73 per cent) and the BSE Healthcare Index (1.57 per cent).
 
The foreign institutional investors were net buyers of Indian shares worth Rs 204.60 crore on Friday, while domestic mutual funds were net sellers of Rs 106.63 crore.
 
TCS was the highest gainer among the frontline stocks. The scrip riding on its strong results went up 5.83 per cent to Rs 1,321. The other major gainers in frontline stocks were""Hero Honda (4.17 per cent), Grasim India (1.87 per cent), Reliance Energy (3.73 per cent), Infosys (3.50 per cent), Satyam Computer (3.28 per cent), Bajaj Auto (2.74 per cent), Larsen & Toubro (2.66 per cent) and HLL (2.27 per cent).
 
Only seven scrips went down in the basket. The major losers were-ITC (1.78 per cent), ONGC (1.04 per cent) and Reliance (0.80 per cent).
 
In the banking sector, United Western Bank went up about 20 per cent to close at Rs 55.80. Major gainers in this sector were-Centurion Bank (11.96 per cent), Yes Bank (4.05 per cent), Bank of India (3.84 per cent) and Bank of Baroda (3.74 per cent).
 
The major losers in this section were Kotak Mahindra Bank(2.83 per cent), Corporation Bank(1.58 per cent), Indian Overseas Bank (0.54 per cent) and HDFC Bank (0.44 per cent).
 
The HMT scrip was the highest gainer among the auto stocks, up 22 per cent at Rs 70.70. Other major gainers in this sector were-LML (12.94 per cent), Ashok Leyland (8.02 per cent), Maharashtra Scooters (7.84 per cent) and Hero Honda (4.17 per cent).
 
The major losers were-Premier Ltd (3.24 per cent), Eicher (2.54 per cent), Escorts (1.10 per cent) and Mahindra & Mahindra (0.43per cent).
 
The strong leap by software major TCS followed after the company announced that it has bagged a $100 million contract with an unidentified US financial services firm. Aptech spurted 79.35per cent after Aptech Investments, offered to purchase 6.89 million shares at Rs 61 per share from its public shareholders.
 
Among the other gainers in the IT sector were-Melstar Info (12.01 per cent), Computech Int (8.75 per cent) and SRG Infotech (8.13 per cent).
