Globalisation of the textile trade will have a serious impact on the powerloom sector and there is a need for effective, concerted and time bound efforts to upgrade the technology, skills of the weavers, design infrastructure, credit support and quality, said Union minister for textiles Kashiram Rana.
Speaking at the third meeting of the development council on the textile industry here today, he said the government is considering a capital subsidy scheme for powerloom units to boost technological upgradation.
The Indian weaving sector is one of the poorest technological link in the value-chain for textiles and therefore the need for installing shuttleless looms has become urgent, Rana said.
