Both Sensex and Nifty consolidated on Wednesday as investors turned cautious and booked profits ahead of the general elections results due on Friday.
Investor sentiment was also subdued on Wednesday as Consumer price inflation (CPI) numbers released on Monday shows that retail inflation rose from 8.3 per cent in March 2014 to 8.6 per cent in April 2014.
The 30-share Sensex closed 56 points lower at 23,815 and the 50-share Nifty was down 2 points at 7,107.
