Quick churn is the new order

As the markets turned fairly volatile in the last two weeks, the Smart Portfolios fund managers too were quick to book gains available in few cases. Shishir Bajpai and Vinay Khattar were the two active fund managers over the last fortnight. Ajay Parmar preferred to remain on the sidelines. In the period under review, both the fund managers cumulatively bought shares worth just Rs 6,292, whereas their gross volume totaled Rs 42.25 lakh on the back of 62 buy and sell transactions.

The Smart Portfolios’ benchmark S&P CNX 500 index’s portfolio value saw a marginal cut of 0.4 per cent to Rs 10.38 lakh in the last fortnight. However, the net worth gained 4.2 per cent since the inception of the Smart Portfolios on September 1,2010.

Ajay Parmar, who holds cash of Rs 1.12 lakh, preferred to remain on the sidelines for the last two weeks. In the prior week, he had made four new investments, of which newly listed Lovable Lingerie has appreciated over 13 per cent from his cost price.

On the other hand, his investments in Mahindra Holidays, Walchandnagar Industries and Phoenix Mills are currently trading at three-five per cent discount to his acquisition price. Parmar saw a net loss of one per cent in the last two weeks. The total portfolio is now valued at Rs 9.93 lakh, down 0.7 per cent.

Shishir Bajpai executed 24 trades, wherein his gross purchases totaled Rs 10.82 lakh and gross sales stood at Rs 10.84 lakh. He booked gains of over 25 per cent on his investment in Crew BOS Products. Other profitable trades included investments in Indiabulls Real Estate, Uflex and Tulip Telecom. On the other hand, he incurred losses in Jai Balaji Industries, IRB Infrastructure and Cairn India. Bajpai’s fresh investments are Sintex, Indiabulls Securities, Arvind, Usha Martin and JB Chemicals and Prime Focus. His net worth declined 1.4 per cent to Rs 13.97 lakh, which however, is up a whopping 39.7 per cent since inception.

VINAY KHATTAR
RESEARCH HEAD, EDELWEISS WEALTH MANAGEMENT

Vinay Khattar performance was more-or-less in line with the benchmark with a net loss of 0.6 per cent last fortnight. He executed 38 trades, of which, he bought shares worth Rs 10.33 lakh and sold stocks to the tune of Rs 10.26 lakh. He booked gains in excess of 12 per cent each on his investments in Srei Infrastructure and Prime Focus. He also logged smart gains in KEC International, Delta Corp, First Leasing Company, BF Utilities and Havells India. His prominent fresh buys are JB Chemicals, Everonn Education and BF Utilities. Khattar’s portfolio is valued at Rs 12.67 lakh, up 26.7 per cent.
