A small village, Devgadh, situated in the Konkan belt of the Western Ghats produces the finest quality of Alphonso mangoes in the country. |
The mangoes from this village are specially grown in the orchards spread across the 1000 acre. Devgadh is blessed with fertile soil rich in minerals, and a favourable climate with ample sunlight and humidity. All these factors imparts a unique aroma and flavour to its mangoes. |
Devgadh is situated in a radius of 12 km from the coastal belt, which is said to be the reason for the fruit to be golden-yellow in colour and its sweet taste. |
"Devgadh mangoes do not have fibre and are easily digestible, unlike those from Ratnagiri, Dapoli and other places," said Devgadh-based farmer, Satyawan Jamsandekar, who supplies mangoes to Mumbai. |
"The prevailing conception that Alphonso mangoes are from Ratnagiri. is wrong. The best quality Alphonsos are grown in Devgadh. Mumbaikars prefer mangoes from Devgadh," said Amol Jamsandekar, a mango farmer. |
He has been doing this business for the last 32 years, having more than 3,000 mango trees in the Devgadh taluka. |
"The size of the mangoes depend on the quality and we grow mangoes of various quality," said Amol. The US President, George Bush also announced during his visit that America was interested in importing Indian mangoes. |
