Reliance soars 9%, powers Sensex

After opening 137 points higher at 9,208, the Sensex displayed positive trend throughout the day. The index, which, rallied to a high of 9,388, witnessed intra-day profit-taking.

However, aggressive buying towards the end saw the Sensex rally to a high of 9,413, before settling with a solid gain of 299 points at 9,370.

The BSE Oil & Gas index soared 6% to 5,810, and the IT index surged 5% to 2,255. The Realty and Metal indices surged over 4% each to 1,853 and 5,058, respectively.

The market breadth was fairly positive - out of 2,489 stocks traded, 1,402 advanced, 982 declined and the rest were unchanged today.

INDEX MOVERS...

Reliance group stocks witnessed hectic buying towards the end amid talks of a likely settlement between the Ambani brothers. Reliance zoomed 9% to Rs 1,178. Reliance Communications soared 10.4% to Rs 185, and Reliance Infrastructure surged 9.7% to Rs 522. However, Reliance clarified that the rumours are unsubstantiated and baseless in the evening.

Infosys rallied 6% to Rs 1,305. Mahindra & Mahindra and Tata Steel gained 5.3% each at Rs 320 and Rs 213, respectively.

Jaiprakash Associates moved up 5% to Rs 70. Hindalco and Sterlite advanced around 4% each to Rs 51 and Rs 273, respectively.

ICICI Bank advanced 3.5% to Rs 441, and DLF added 3.3% to Rs 212.

TCS and Bharti Airtel were up around 3% each at Rs 538 and Rs 624, respectively.

...AND THE SHAKERS

Grasim plunged 3.5% to Rs 1,283. Sun Pharma and HDFC Bank declined over 1% each to Rs 1,120 and Rs 977, respectively.

VALUE & VOLUME TOPPERS

Reliance topped the value chart with a turnover of Rs 286.35 crore followed by Rolta (Rs 132.57 crore), Reliance Capital (Rs 132.20 crore), Reliance Communications (Rs 125.30 crore) and Infosys (Rs 107.25 crore).

Satyam led the volume chart with trades of around 2.67 crore shares followed by Reliance Natural Resources (2 crore), Rolta (1.53 crore), Unitech (1.36 crore) and Suzlon (86.50 lakh).
