The Sensex has drifted deeper into red and is now down 179 points (2.2%) at 8,147. Earlier in the day, the index opened 67 points lower this morning.
The BSE Realty index has plunged over 3% to 1,303. The FMCG index has shed 3% at 1,799, and the Bankex has dropped 2.5% to 3,645.
Sun Pharma has slumped 4.5% to Rs 977. Hindalco and Hindustan Unilever have shed 4.3% each at Rs 38 and Rs 214, respectively.
DLF, Jaiprakash Associates and ITC have plunged around 4% each to Rs 139, Rs 67 and Rs 158, respectively.
TCS has dropped 3.5% to Rs 464. Wipro has tumbled over 3% to Rs 207.
Reliance Communications and Reliance Infrastructure have slipped nearly 3% each to Rs 134 and Rs 440, respectively.
ACC, Bharti Airtel and Reliance have declined around 2.5% each to Rs 517, Rs 587 and Rs 1,142, respectively.

SBI, Sterlite and Tata Steel are down 2.3% each at Rs 919, Rs 244 and Rs 153, respectively.
ONGC, BHEL, Tata Power and ICICI Bank are also down around 2% each.
HDFC, however, has bucked the trend and is up 2% at Rs 1,249.
The market breadth is fairly negative - out of 2,041 stocks traded so far, 1,308 have declined, 671 have advanced and the rest are unchanged.
