The Sensex opened with a positive gap of 34 points at 13,730. After touching a low of 13,726, the index rallied sharply on significant buying in auto, banking and FCMG shares.Unabated buying saw the index rally to a new, all-time intra-day high of 13,858 before settling at a record 13,845 - up 148 points.The Sensex is now just 155 points short of another landmark - 14,000.The BSE Auto index surged nearly 3% to 5473. The Bankex and FMCG index gained around 1.5% each to 7290 and 2051, respectively. The Teck index was up 1% at 3594.The market breadth was fairly positive - out of 2,650 stocks traded, 1,515 moved up, 1,066 declined and the rest were unchanged today.NIFTY CROSSES 4,000The National Stock Exchange index, the Nifty, crossed a major landmark of 4,000 towards the close today. The index touched an intra-day high of 4,001, and closed at a record 3998 - up 43 points.INDEX MOVERS & SHAKERSTata Motors, Bajaj Auto and Hero Honda rallied around 4% each to Rs 843, Rs 2,748 and Rs 772, respectively. Maruti surged 3% to Rs 952.SBI advanced 3.5% to Rs 1,360. Reliance Communications and Ranbaxy soared around 3% each to Rs 442 and Rs 383, respectively. Dr.Reddy's moved up 2.6% to Rs 770.Reliance Energy gained 2% to Rs 540. HLL added 2% to Rs 240. ITC and Satyam were up 1.7% each at Rs 188 and Rs 467, respectively. Reliance ended at Rs 1,261, up 1.3%. VALUE & VOLUME TOPPERSParsvnath topped the value chart with a turnover of Rs 218.50 crore followed by Donear Industries (Rs 114 crore), Indiabulls (Rs 109 crore), Reliance (Rs 95.70 crore) and Paramount Communications (Rs 93.40 crore).Bella Steel led the volume chart with trades of around 69.35 lakh shares followed by Shiva Cement (60 lakh), Donear Indsutries (59.75 lakh), Torrent Pharma (48.52 lakh) and Parsvnath (42 lakh).
