The Sensex opened with a significant loss of 304 points at 8,536 on the back of weak cues from the US markets. The index continues to display lacklustre movement and is now down 286 points at 8,554.
Sterlite has slumped 6.7% to Rs 223, and Mahindra & Mahindra has tumbled 6.3% to Rs 255.
Maruti has plunged 5.5% to Rs 459. Hindalco, HDFC and HDFC Bank have shed nearly 6% each to Rs 49, Rs 1,367 and Rs 856, respectively.
Reliance, DFL, SBI, Reliance Communications and Jaiprakash Associates have slipped over 4% each to Rs 1,060, Rs 171, Rs 1,010 and Rs 54, respectively.
ICICI Bank, Wipro, Tata Steel, TCS, ONGC and Infosys are down around 3% each.
The market breadth is extremely negative - out of 1,548 stocks traded so far, 1,139 have declined, 364 have advanced and 45 are unchanged.
