The Sensex opened with a negative gap of 54 points at 12,164. A fresh round of selling in the late morning deals saw the index slide to a low of 11,618 - down 600 points from the previous close.The index is now down 441 points at 11,776.Hindalco has plunged 8.6% to Rs 199. Tata Steel has tumbled 5.5% to Rs 578.ACC has crashed 5.7% to Rs 856, and Gujarat Ambuja has crumbled 5.5% to Rs 103. Grasim is down 5% at Rs 2,065.Tata Motors and Maruti have shed nearly 6% each to Rs 907 and Rs 860, respectively. BHEL has dropped over 5% to Rs 2,205. Larsen & Toubro and SBI have tumbled over 4% each to Rs 2,580 and Rs 947, respectively.Out of 2,412 stocks traded so far, 2,025 have declined, 359 have advanced and 28 are unchanged.
