The Sensex opened with a positive gap of 34 points at 12,064. After touching a high of 12,071, the index dipped into negative zone. Sustained selling, mainly in banking and technology stocks, saw the index languish in negative zone for most part of the day. A late bout of selling saw the index tumble to a low of 11,882 - down 189 points from the day's high. The Sensex finally closed with a loss of 1% (115 points) at 11,915.The Bankex and IT index dropped 1.3% each to 5168 and 4088, respectively. The FMCG and Oil & Gas indices gained nearly 1% each at 2285 and 5589, respectively. While the Mid-cap index gained 0.8% to 5673, the Small-cap index rallied 1.3% to 7090.The market breadth was positive - out of 2,557 stocks traded, 1,438 moved up, 1,053 slipped and 66 were unchanged today.INDEX MOVERS & SHAKERSTechnology stocks witnessed heavy selling today. Satyam plunged 4.3% to Rs 773. Wipro and Infosys dropped nearly 3% each to Rs 533 and Rs 3,204, respectively. TCS was down 1% at Rs 1,975.ICICI Bank slumped 3.7% to Rs 568, and HDFC Bank was down 3.3% at Rs 822. HDFC declined 1% to Rs 1,260.Tata Motors slipped over 2% to Rs 958. Bajaj Auto declined 1.5% to Rs 2,929.Dr.Reddy's and Ranbaxy were down around 1.5% each at Rs 1,458 and Rs 497, respectively. Cipla went 3:2 ex-bonus today. The stock opened at Rs 274, touched a high of Rs 277 and a low of Rs 252 before ending at Rs 260.Larsen & Toubro surged nearly 2% to Rs 2,756. ITC rallied 1.5% to Rs 203.OTHER GAINERS & LOSERSBombay Dyeing, Pratibha, Indotech and Gallant Metal zoomed 20% each to Rs 732, Rs 332, Rs 244 and Rs 18.40, respectively. Hindustan Motors, Suashis Diamond, Noida Toll, Adhunik Metalic, Rico Auto and Sunil Hitech also ended with sharp gains in the range of 12-20% each.Panacea Biotech slumped 7.5% to Rs 453. Ispat Industries, State Bank of Mysore, Entertainment Network, Opto Circuits, Gujarat Ambuja Exports, Scandent Solutions, Geodeosic Info, Jindal Drilling, Adlabs, Wockhardt, i-flex, Kotak Bank, VSNL and Andhra Bank were the other major losers today.VALUE & VOLUME TOPPERSDebutant Sun TV topped the value chart with a turnover of Rs 726.23 crore. The stock listed at Rs 1,111 as against the issue price of Rs 875. The stock touched a low of Rs 1,060 before zooming to a high of Rs 1,500. The stock finally ended with a gain of 67.5% (Rs 591) to its issue price at Rs 1,466.Sun was followed by Reliance (Rs 194.21 crore), Satyam (Rs 167.85 crore), VSNL (Rs 155.39 crore) and Infosys (Rs 138.69 crore).Essar Oil led the volume chart with trades of around 1.01 crore shares followed by Hindustan Motors (89.59 lakh), IFCI (64.78 lakh), Sun TV (53 lakh) and SAIL (46.78 lakh).
